After spending so much money on a golden jewel, you can not neglect it and let it become dirty. Golden jewelry care is easy. It consists of just a bit of daily care and only twice yearly dropping your jewels off at a jeweler’s for some expert care. Knowing that your jewels are well taken care of will give you the confidence that you need in order to shine to your fullest.
One rule that applies to all kinds of jewelry – do not use toothpaste to clean your jewels! It contains abrasives that can harm both the metal and gems of your ornament.
In order to preserve the finish and price of your golden jewelry you will have to make a habit of storing each jewel individually. Use a jewelry box with separators or store the jewels in the original container of their purchase.
Golden jewels are almost always made out of alloys. Being too soft and pliable, pure gold cannot be used in jewelry on its own. This means that it is combined with other metals to enhance its properties. The proportion of other metals to gold in the alloy of your jewel is expressed in carats. A golden jewel with a stamp that says 585 mean that it contains 58.5% gold and 41.5% other metals. These other metals can make gold darken in time especially if it has a low carat and contains more additives.
The fading of gold can be facilitated by the use of perfume, aftershave, fluoride and other minerals in water, and even by the acidity of your own skin. It is a known fact that soap creates a thin dark coating over golden jewels, so it is a good idea to take them off before bathing or showering.
A special jewelry polishing tissue doused in anti-oxidant solution will help your jewels keep their shine. You can find these tissues in your local jewelry shop. Silver and golden ornaments can be cleaned at home with a soft detergent or dish-washing liquid and a soft toothbrush.
Please take note that these procedures for cleaning gold should not be used if your jewel is embellished with a precious stone, such as an opal or pearl. The methods of caring for gems are entirely different.
