There are many kinds of ornaments and many ways to show them off, but the motivations behind decorating one’s own body from head to toe are not that many. If we can disregard the price and purpose of a certain ornament and look on it without the prejudice of value or design, we will be able to understand much about the character and aspirations of its owner.

Typically a jewel serves no practical purpose and this needlessness is precisely what makes it so expressive of the personality of its owner. Why else would one wear a jewel that is not practically needed if not to express his or her character, taste and individuality? Buying jewelry, a person utilizes his or her personal sense of aesthetics, which dictates whether a certain piece harmonizes with this person’s style, image, emotional and erotic mindset.

Jewels as erotic signals

Sensuality and erotica are very intimate fields, because they pertain to a person’s innermost desires, relationships and expectations – the area where one is at his most vulnerable and least willing to tolerate criticism. When selecting jewelry, this emotional state plays a significant role, whether consciously or subconsciously. This is why jewelry is loaded with erotic signals and expressions.

The type of the jewel and the body part it decorates should be carefully noted if one is to decipher its meaning. A simple gold chain can send different messages depending on where it is worn – around the neck, around the waist or around the ankle. The same diamond ring can change its meaning depending on whether it is placed on the ring or little finger and whether it is combined with other rings or worn plainly.

A jewel attracts attention altogether, not only to the part of the body where it is placed. Earrings highlight the ears, but also the neckline and the whole face. A bracelet draws attention not only to the wrist but also to the whole arm. An ankle chain emphasizes the legs, not just the ankles and feet. A ring directs one’s gaze toward the whole hand.
